Field notes for your gut

How is Pina today?

No entry yet — 30 seconds, once a day.

General wellbeing

Pancina is a Crohn's diary: thirty seconds a day, your Apple Watch at night, one page for your gastroenterologist.

Free, forever. iPhone first. Italian and English. Not in the App Store yet.

01The daily check-inCheck-in giornaliero

How was today? Pina wears the answer.

Five short steps on published instruments — the modified Harvey-Bradshaw Index and CD PRO-2. You answer, the app writes it down, and Pina la Pancina's face changes with your first answer.

  • liquid stools
  • pain 0–3
  • wellbeing 0–4
  • stress 0–10
  • urgency
  • complications

One question per screen.

Five steps, one control each, big enough for a thumb. Only the first asks how you are — the rest are counts.

Her face is your answer.

Slide her yourself: Pina changes. That is your logged wellbeing shown back — nothing more, nothing added.

Saved. Thirty seconds.

Each day gets a number — mHBI 3 — added up from what you entered and shown without adjustment. The days become a record; the record is a conversation with your gastroenterologist.

Arrow keys change the value.

The five steps, exactly as the app asks them

  1. Wellbeing

General wellbeing — five words from Very well to Terrible. Pina mirrors the one you choose.

  2. Bowel

Liquid or very soft stools today and Urgency episodes today. Prefilled from today's stool log — adjust if needed.

  3. Pain

Abdominal pain: None · Mild · Moderate · Severe. Four full-width cards, one tap.

  4. Stress

Stress today (0–10). Your own number for how the day felt. Nothing is measured.

  5. Anything else

Anything else present today? — joint pain, mouth ulcers, eye inflammation, skin nodules, fissure, fistula, abscess. Then Notes (optional): anything your gastro should know.

Backfill

Missed yesterday? Open it from the day strip and add it. The app keeps the honest time of every entry.

Weekly mode

When your gastroenterologist agrees things are quiet, switch to one entry a week. Pina rests, and the Home screen says so: All quiet — this week's entry is in and your watch keeps the baseline.

Reminders

A gentle nudge at your chosen time — never a guilt trip. At the hour you pick, on the day you pick.

02While you sleepLa notte

Your watch keeps the night. Nothing is asked of you after dark.

Wear your Apple Watch to bed. If you allow it, Pancina reads the night from Apple Health — the part of the diary you don't write.

Every value is shown as recorded. Nothing is evaluated or flagged — it sits next to your entries, for you and your gastroenterologist to read together.

  • Optional, and off by default. One switch in Settings stops it; what is already stored stays yours to keep or erase.
  • No watch? The diary is complete without it.
  • Menstrual-cycle days you log in Apple Health appear as a neutral band on the calendar. Context, nothing more.
  • Resting heart rate

    58bpm

  • HRV (SDNN)

    39ms, recorded on sparse nights

  • Awakenings

Seven, thirty, sixty days. Simple averages, nothing more.

Trends shows what you recorded: most recent, average, range. Where a published general reference exists it is drawn as a shaded zone — a ruler next to your data, never a verdict on it.

03The rest of the storyRegistra al volo

Everything else,
in as few taps as it deserves.

Crohn's doesn't happen once a day at eight. So the rest of the diary is built for the moment it actually happens — including the one from a Home Screen widget, without opening the app.

  • Stools · five seconds

Bristol type, and whether there was urgency, blood or mucus.

Time-stamped, so a stool at 3 a.m. is kept as a stool at 3 a.m. and appears on the report under its own Nocturnal (00:00-06:00) line. The daily check-in prefills itself from this log.

  • Food · with tags

What you ate, in your words, with a few tags for later.

The tags are shorthand for reading the entry back later. Pancina keeps the record; what it means is for you and your care team.

  • Therapies · calendar

Each dose you log, on a calendar that wears your days.

A record of what you take, when — bring it to your next appointment. The app never adjusts or advises on medication.

  • Labs · calprotectin

Lab result, read by your phone, confirmed by you.

Point the camera at the report; the number is read on your phone, suggested, and saved only when you confirm it. The photo is never stored.

  • Widgets · Home Screen

One tap on the Home Screen. The app can stay closed.

Four widgets: Pina la Pancina (her mood and the check-in ring), La visita (the countdown, even above the clock), Diario di oggi (today at a glance) and Registra al volo — one tap; it syncs when you next open the app.

Every entry carries when it was recorded, not just when it happened. The diary is honest about its own timing.

Then the appointment

04The visitLa visita

Arrive with your data. Thirty days, one page.

One page with your scores, trends, medications and labs — made to be read in a 15‑minute appointment.

Set the date once. Pancina counts down, reminds you the day before and, in the last two weeks, offers the report from the Home screen — 30 or 90 days, paper or PDF.

Then the fifteen minutes can start from the page instead of from memory.

Scores
Latest mHBI and CD PRO‑2 (7‑day), added up from what you entered.
Chart
Daily mHBI on its published bands. Not smoothed; a missed day is a gap.
Stools
Logged, liquid, nocturnal, blood, urgency — counted, not weighed.
Night
Wearable physiology as window averages, and the nights that had data.
Meds, labs
Medications and doses, complications, the latest calprotectin values.
Footer
This report presents data recorded by the patient … without interpretation. On every page, because it is the point.

05Why a bean?Perché un fagiolo?

A hard habit, a soft face.

Pancina is what Italians call a belly they're fond of. Pina la Pancina is a small, smiling, stomach-shaped bean — the first face you see each day.

You answer for her, and she wears it. Very well and she beams; a terrible day and she looks the way you said.

Her colour is never yours to change — colour is how she tells the day's wellbeing. Asleep until you check in; resting in weekly mode.

She's there because a diary you dread is a diary you stop keeping. Something has to make thirty seconds feel like care, not admin.

06Your data, your callI tuoi dati, la tua scelta

What Pancina is. What it isn't.

Health data is a special category of personal data under EU law, and it should feel that way. Here is what happens to yours, and what this app does not do.

Pancina is a diary. It does not diagnose, predict flares or give medical advice — always discuss your data with your gastroenterology team.

What happens to your data

Consent first
Nothing is recorded before you choose. Two separate, explicit consents (GDPR Art. 9): the diary and, if you choose, Apple Health. Withdraw either from Settings: recording stops at once, and what you already entered stays yours to keep.
Stored in the EU
The app's consent screen says it plainly: Data is stored in the EU (europe-west) and never used for advertising or shared with third parties. Our hosting provider keeps it for us under a GDPR processing agreement. Nobody else.
No ads. Never sold.
No analytics SDKs on your health data. No advertising identifiers. Nothing about you is a product.
Yours to take or erase
Export it all as JSON, FHIR or the Passaporto PDF. Or delete the account and every record — permanently, no questions, no waiting period.

What it doesn't do

Doesn't interpret
It records what you enter and what your watch saved, and shows it back: the published scores, your own numbers charted, one page for the visit. What any of it means is a conversation for you and your care team — Pancina doesn't offer one, on purpose.
Doesn't tell you what tomorrow holds
It doesn't try to, and it won't claim it can. What you get is your own history, kept as you entered it, so that is this a flare or a bad week is a question you bring to your gastroenterologist with your record in hand.
Doesn't need a watch
The diary itself — check-in, stools, food, therapies, labs, report — is complete without one. A watch adds the night, and only with a second consent.

Where this is going — and isn't yet

The long road
Every entry says where it came from — you, a lab, a sensor — and is exported in an open standard (FHIR). By design. If one day, with its own consent, under CE marking and after prospective studies, that record can do more for people with Crohn's, we want to be ready. Not before, and not quietly.

Italian first, not Italian only: fully bilingual, Italian and English, down to the PDFs. The waitlist is open anywhere.

Periodo fondatori

Pancina is free while it's built with its first users — no code, no list, no card. If paid reports ever arrive, you'll read it in the app first, well before anything changes, and never on the morning of a visit. The diary stays free either way.

The waitlist only tells you when Pancina reaches the App Store.
